What is Mediation?
Mediation is a private process by which individuals negotiate their divorce. A Mediator is a neutral professional who keeps the conversation focused and productive. The Mediator guides you toward an agreement that is satisfactory to all involved. The result of Mediation is a document that meets the legal requirements to complete the divorce process.
Why should you choose Mediation?
There are many benefits to mediation. You can avoid going to court. During mediation you make the decisions about your assets, debts, children and pets instead of being told by a Judge what will happen. You work together toward resolutions, instead of against each other. While you make decisions you control the pace, meaning you aren’t rushed to decide before a looming court date. Mediation is held in as many sessions as you need and is often much less expensive. During Kim & Marla’s free mediation consultation you will learn about these benefits and more.
Why do we Teach?
As a Judge, Kim watched divorces occur through the legal system and felt if the parents had the chance to sit together, with the help of a neutral professional they would be able to make agreements. Kim was already trained as a Mediator and started working with divorcing couples and guiding them to solutions. She also started training new Mediators throughout the State of Indiana, when she met Marla. As a Therapist, Marla worked to help couples build their communication skills and co-parenting abilities but soon learned after their divorce through the legal process they had become argumentative and uncooperative with each other. Marla wanted a process to help couples keep their communication skills strong so that their decision making would be productive and effective even after a divorce. Kim and Marla agreed there had to be a better way to divorce and started mediating divorces together. With Kim’s legal background and Marla’s therapeutic background they are perfectly paired as Mediators to cover all issues that arise in a divorce. Kim & Marla have spent years building a thriving mediation practice to assist divorcing couples. We also train Mediators together throughout the state of Indiana. Marla is a past board member of the Indiana Association of Mediators and Kim is a current board member. We are both members of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC) and stay current in our Mediation Profession.
Our Philosophy:
Divorce is often seen as the end of the family. We believe divorce is really a transition from a marriage relationship to a parenting team, working together for the benefit of the children. If there are no children involved, we believe ending the marriage in the most peaceful, cooperative way possible through mediation helps both people start rebuilding their lives in a healthy way.
